The terms “water repellence”, “water resistance” and “waterproofness” are often used to describe the varying abilities of textiles to provide protection in wet weather. But each term has a distinct meaning.
Moisture- or water-repellent fabrics shed water and snow as long as the chemical treatment remains intact. Over time, the treatment will wash or wear off and it will have to be renewed.

Only face fabrics made of abrasion-resistant materials can durably withstand constant friction from stones and rocks, or the straps of a rucksack. Fabrics without this feature wear and lose their functionality over time.
